VISITING ROME IN ONE DAY
Rome is universally known as the “Eternal City” and is considered one of the most fascinating cities in the world. Its historic center, enclosed within ancient walls, contains around 25,000 historical, artistic, and archaeological sites and points of interest. Rome is the undisputed queen of Italian tourism, attracting millions of visitors every year. For this reason, it is important to plan ahead and book tickets and guided tours online to avoid long queues at the museums.
If you have just one day to visit Rome, keep in mind that you would need much more time to discover every corner of the city. However, we propose an itinerary that can serve as the first of a two- or three-day visit. Put on comfortable shoes and get ready to walk through history.
To begin, we suggest starting with the Vatican. From Termini station, you can take the metro to Ottaviano station (about a 17-minute ride) and then, after a short 5-minute walk, you will reach the entrance to the Vatican Museums, one of the largest museum complexes in the world.
Vatican Museums The Vatican Museums are among the largest and richest in the world. We recommend a guided tour of about 4 hours: you’ll be able to admire the main attractions without waiting in line. The visit includes the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter’s Basilica. Once you exit the Basilica, cross St. Peter’s Square and admire the façade and its magnificent colonnade. Take Via della Conciliazione for a 15-minute walk to Castel Sant’Angelo.
Castel Sant’Angelo This castle, with its unique history, has gone through several transformations that make it a one-of-a-kind monument in Rome. The visit lasts about an hour and also offers a wonderful view over the city.
After your visit, cross Ponte Sant’Angelo and enter the area of ancient Rome; strolling through characteristic alleys, you’ll arrive at Piazza Navona and then at the Pantheon. From here, continue your walk towards the Colosseum.
Colosseum A symbol of Rome and one of the world’s most famous monuments, the Colosseum—officially known as the Flavian Amphitheatre—was the scene of gladiator fights and various spectacles. It is an unmissable stop on your visit to Rome!
VISITING ROME IN TWO DAYS
Tickets for the Colosseum are often combined and valid for two days, allowing access to the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill as well.
Roman Forum and Palatine Hill Start your second day at the Roman Forum, one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world, and then head up to the Palatine Hill, where you will walk among the ruins of ancient imperial Rome. Afterwards, take the metro from the Colosseum station and get off at Circus Maximus; from there, a ten-minute walk will bring you to the Baths of Caracalla.
Baths of Caracalla Regarded as one of the largest and best-preserved thermal complexes of antiquity, the Baths of Caracalla were dedicated to wellbeing, study, and relaxation. After your visit, you can take a taxi and, in about twenty minutes, reach the Borghese Gallery.
Borghese Gallery Located within the enchanting Villa Borghese park, this gallery is one of the most important art museums in the world, with masterpieces by Caravaggio, Bernini, Titian, Raphael, Rubens, Botticelli, and unforgettable sculptures by Bernini and Canova. Entrance is allowed only in the reserved time slot (lasting 2 hours).
At the end of the visit, cross the park to reach Piazza di Spagna, famous for the Spanish Steps (Scalinata di Trinità dei Monti)—the heart of one of Rome’s most elegant districts. Just a few minutes away on foot, you’ll find the Trevi Fountain, the perfect place to end your second day in the capital.
VISITING ROME IN THREE DAYS
If you have a third day, we suggest a trip outside the city to discover the picturesque towns near /rome
Rome, rich in history and charm:
- Tivoli: with Villa d’Este and Hadrian’s Villa, splendid testaments to the past.
- Ostia Antica: to discover the daily life of ancient Romans.
- Assisi: a lovely medieval town, famous for its views and traditional cuisine.
- Orvieto: perched on a cliff, fascinating both by day and by night.
- Castelli Romani: a group of historic towns on the Alban Hills, perfect for trips and wine tasting.
- Castel Gandolfo: overlooking Lake Albano, one of “The Most Beautiful Villages in Italy” and famous as the Pope’s summer residence.
These itineraries will help you make the most of your stay in Rome, no matter how much time you have!
