The Capitoline Museums, located in Rome, are considered the world’s first public museum, founded in 1471 by Pope Sixtus IV. Situated in Piazza del Campidoglio, designed by Michelangelo, the museums are mainly housed in two buildings: the Palazzo dei Conservatori and the Palazzo Nuovo. The collection includes classical and Renaissance artworks, with masterpieces like the equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius, the Capitoline Wolf, and a vast array of Greek and Roman sculptures. The museum also offers fascinating archaeological artifacts and works by Caravaggio. The breathtaking view from the terrace over the city of Rome makes the Capitoline Museums an essential stop for those visiting the capital.
